A must watch recording from the original fisheries collaborator Dr. Martin Hall (2014)

ISTS New Orlean- what a great talk given by one of my mentors - a must for anyone wanting to work WITH fisheries on bycatch issues.

Just sharks feeding on bycatch (2012)

During my thesis research I had the opportunity to see sharks!

Sometimes you got to make it fit. Only few know what im taking about here...
Diversity

Hook size diversity from a Taiwanese boat operating of the Guiana's shield.

Cynosion acoupa bladder drying table.

The world market for Cyanidea swim bladders is causing a havoc and threatening fisheries sustainability in the tropics

Turtles going back in ok

This turtle captured in a non TED equipped shrimp trawl during experiments went back in safe after a little rest.  did you know that sending a turtle back to sea tiered is equivalent to killing them, hard to help a leatherback 'catch its breath' at sea if your in a small boat.  A larger vessel, why not?

Feeding the Caribbean

Can you tell me what country these coastal gill-netting boats are based in?

Shallow water rigs for tropical tuna fishing

This method of photographing fishing gear is helpful in getting info across to the general public and sometimes this includes 'trained' observers.

The Guiana's shields estuary complex is unique with the amazon as its major affluent.

In 2006 working in the Maronie Estuary to characterize the native 'Kali'na peoples inate approches to preventing bycatch of leatherback turtles in there traditions of fishing.

Gabonese Tiger prawn. It was not supposed to be there.

So I ate it. :)

Fish fouling up the webbing in the TED extension and flap.

This helps illustrate why EU regs specify that TEDs are exempt form the obligation of having mesh as small at the Bag (Cul de chalut).

So much going on in this picture. its a start in itself

where to start...

Now this TED is the bomb.

Just saying that the 2inch flat bar TED changed the way we look at TEDs (More then for turtles and big animals). See the results of my thesis in the PDFs of the main menu.

Building 'industrial size' separation boards for keeping the catch separated on the back deck of a t

Luckily as a fisheries biologist I also know how to build kitchens.  Keeping things separated, clean and well built, you reduce variability in your results.

In many countries people actually aligne the shrimp in the boxes by hand.
Bycatch of cownose rays during TED experiment

Clearly the TED is alot better then no TED at all when it comes to elasmobranchs.  But reducing the spacing between the bars makes the TED that much more effective.

TTED in GA

This picture"s illustrates the difference in bycatch of sharks between a standard TED equipped trawl and a TTED equipped trawl.
