I spend a lot of time thinking about how to work with different fisheries on bycatch issues (e.g., different types of gear best suited for different fishing communities), and how to get the general population interested in well functioning sustainable fisheries. The general public is key to driving meaningful change in fishing operations.

In a market driven economy, demand for sustainably caught seafood is the most powerful motivator for industry adoption of sustainable measures.

My name is Michel Anthony Nalovic, but since birth, everyone calls me Tony. I was born in, and currently live in French Guiana. Ever since I could remember I wanted to be a marine biologist, and I have pursued and continue to live out this calling I know is my life’s purpose. I am dedicated to improving fisheries’ operation management and bycatch issues locally and internationally. Some of my work includes, but is not limited to, advising governments and environmental NGO’s on bycatch and fishing management, organizing and delivering workshops at international events, and gear trials/evaluations on industrial fishing boats. I am passionate about my work. My close friends tell me I’m obsessed with fishing and bycatch, and they’re probably right!
I grew up in a fishing family. I witnessed the industry side growing up watching my father manage 30 semi-industrial shrimp boats, and we regularly went sport fishing on the weekends. My first job was as crew member on a shrimp boat. I am a fisher. I attained my Masters Degree in Marine Biology at the Virginia Institute of Marine Studies

My first job was as crew member on a shrimp boat. I am a fisher. I attained my Masters Degree in Marine Biology at the Virginia Institute of Marine Studies in the US. As a fisher and a marine biologist, I am able to bridge the perspectives of science and fishers. My intimate knowledge and experience in the fishing industry enable me to mingle and sometimes convince the most resistant boat captains to work with me on sustainability improvements.
A few key principles (non exhaustive) that help define my approach to working on bycatch are:
· Developing trust amongst fishers I work with through listening, transparency, humility, and identifying shared goals.
· Building a network of countries, organizations, and persons uniquely tailored for a specific project's success.
· Promoting collaborative fisheries research because we all need to work together to make meaningful change.
· I have deep understanding of physical fishing gear on boats to analyze, diagnose, and solve gear problems quickly
Have a look around and learn about some of my work. Take a moment to drop me a line If you have questions, I'd love to hear from you and learn about your ideas, issues or opportunities.
I use the Collaborative Fisheries Research approach in my projects- Do you want to know more about human dimensions and the impact on fishers adoption of innovations? This is where things get interesting...
Very briefly, fishermen can be complex, and can have perceptions/ideas that they feel as strongly about, just a scientists are attached to research results or publications. The key is to get both sides to talk and listen to each other. Breaking the ice can this takes some skills and a-lot of intuition, especially when dealing with conflictual situations.
I am a product of the fishing industry, I know how to walk the walk and talk the talk. I am a scientist and yet I respect the perspective and expertise of people who do not have my training. Every project I am involved with is handled transparently, outcomes have always been optimal and often leading to other ideas and projects. I dont cut conversations, I dont cut corners, I dont spare means needed to build value build and strengthen partnerships. I dont sell dreams, yet find ways to bring out the best in broad scope of partners. I help fishers make their case and open doors for the science and concerted management. Once I'm involved, I push to see things through and make sure others aquire my capacities/knowledge by always finding ways finding

The EU's imports market for wild caught tropical shrimp is responsible for the bycatch of many turtles worldwide. There is a solution and lats of good folks are pushing for the needed change.
This document can be adapted to many fisheries and contexts
Dont hesitate to contact me if you need help designing one adapted to your fishery or help learning how to train fishers to do this. Special attention needs for turtles affected by berotrauma can make handling complicated.
The most structured document I ever wrote
Find out more about TEDs and new designs that can really clean up the bycatch of shrimp trawls and yet maintain or even increase the targeted shrimp catch - beyond turtles it's great for elasmobranchs bycatch, I mean amazing
